Atem is a musical project in progress. Atem creates music, only music created through improvisation of body, voice and mind. You can listen to it or use it for focus, meditation, relaxation and personal growth.
We live in an age where human beings are gradually becoming detached from all the sensitivities of the body, the nervous system, hormones and neurotransmitters; even music is undergoing an invasion of artificial intelligence and humanoid voices. Atem is a totally alien project: the creative moment is entirely physical and generated by the human nervous system.
This music is not (or not only) “for” meditation, but rather “is” meditation by itself. I play without a plan, the music develops and unfolds freely together with my body and my voice. So when someone listens to it, they meditate along with me. And this happens even when the listener is working, studying or travelling.
Meditating essentially means being mentally present, in the here and now. Meditating while playing music is no different, but there is a greater level of activity and involvement; moreover, music evokes feelings, memories, emotions and affections in the present space. Sometimes the focus is on the musical material itself, while at other times it follows the intense paths of feelings.
In this musical project you should not expect neutral sounds, soundscapes, Tibetan bells or other beautiful aids to meditation. This is music, even though it is based on an idea very close to the principles of meditation. However, it is normal that all the states of mind that can be observed in meditation are encountered here, including sadness, nostalgia, and sorrow for the evil, destructive world around us.
